EEI’s Statement on the 100 Percent Clean Economy Act

EEI’s Statement on the 100 Percent Clean Economy Act

Washington, D.C. (November 21, 2019) — Edison Electric Institute (EEI) President Tom Kuhn today issued the following statement on the 100 Percent Clean Economy Act of 2019 introduced by Congressman Donald McEachin.

“EEI’s member companies are united in their commitment to get as clean as they can, as fast as they can, while keeping customer reliability and affordability front and center as always. They are leading the clean energy transformation and are making real, substantive progress. As of year-end 2018, our sector’s carbon dioxide emissions were 27 percent below 2005 levels, and more than one-third of America’s electricity now comes from carbon-free sources, including nuclear energy and renewables.

“Collectively, EEI’s members are on a path to reduce carbon emissions 50 percent by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050, compared with 2005 levels. To ensure that the clean energy transformation reaches its full potential, we urge Congress to increase R&D funding and support for the range of clean energy technologies needed to achieve our clean energy goals.

“America has a unique opportunity to build an economy of the future that is cleaner and stronger than ever. We appreciate that this legislation recognizes the importance of taking an economy-wide approach to addressing climate change. By accelerating industrial and transportation electrification, we can leverage the already ongoing emission reductions in the power sector to reduce carbon emissions across our economy, while keeping electricity affordable, reliable, and secure.”
