EEI Statement on the Biden Administration's National Security Memorandum on Improving Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure Control Systems

EEI Statement on the Biden Administration's National Security Memorandum on Improving Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure Control Systems

Washington, D.C. (July 28, 2021) — Edison Electric Institute (EEI) President Tom Kuhn today issued the following statement on the Biden Administration’s new National Security Memorandum on Improving Cybersecurity for Critical Infrastructure Control Systems:

“EEI and our member companies appreciate that cybersecurity has been, and continues to be, a priority for President Biden and leaders across the administration. We have long maintained that grid security is a shared responsibility, and addressing dynamic threats to the energy grid requires vigilance and coordination that leverages both government and industry resources.

"The electric power sector was proud to be the first to participate in President Biden's '100-day sprint,' which aims to increase visibility into industrial control systems (ICS) and other operational technology. While individual companies monitor these systems, deploying sensors across the electric power sector will provide additional insights and enhance the government-industry partnership. At this time, more than 85 percent of EEI's member companies that own and operate the prioritized control systems that this initiative focuses on already are participating.

"We will continue to work closely with our government partners to learn from this experience and to identify new ways to protect America's critical infrastructure."
