EEI Celebrates Clean Energy Progress on Earth Day
EEI and our member companies are proud to be leading the clean energy transition by investing in increasing amounts of renewable generation and the smarter energy infrastructure needed to deliver resilient clean energy to customers. In 2023 alone, more than 26 gigawatts of new renewable technologies went online in the United States. Across the nation, we are working every day to get the energy we provide as clean as we can as fast as we can, while maintaining the reliability and affordability that our customers deserve.
For our industry, the path forward is clear—the path forward is clean. More than 40 percent of our nation’s electricity now comes from clean, carbon-free sources, including nuclear energy, hydropower, wind, and solar energy.
Emissions from the U.S. electric power sector today are down 41 percent below 2005 levels—thanks largely to the leadership of EEI’s member companies. And, looking further back, emissions sit at nearly 50-year lows, despite electricity generation climbing 108 percent since then.
Already, 50 EEI member companies have announced ambitious long-term carbon-reduction targets, 41 of which are aiming for net-zero or equivalent by 2050 or sooner. We are leading economy-wide emissions reduction efforts, helping to electrify heavy-emitting transportation and industrial sectors.
Earth Day is an opportunity to reflect on our progress to date—and it motivates us to achieve even more in the years ahead. To learn more about our industry’s clean energy vision:
