AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (January 10, 2024) — Calvin G. Butler, president and CEO of Chicago, Ill.-based Exelon, today was elected vice chair of the board of the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the national association of investor-owned electric companies.
EEI’s Board elected Butler during the institute’s winter meeting in Amelia Island, Fla. Butler will serve alongside EEI Chair Pedro J. Pizarro, president and CEO of Rosemead, Calif.-based Edison International, and EEI Vice Chair Maria M. Pope, president and CEO of Portland, Ore.-based Portland General Electric, both of whom were elected during EEI’s June board meeting.

Calvin Butler is president and CEO of Exelon, the parent company of six local electric and natural gas companies – Atlantic City Electric, BGE, ComEd, Delmarva Power, PECO, and Pepco. Together, they serve approximately 10 million electric and natural gas customers in New Jersey, Maryland, Illinois, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. He serves as chair of each operating company’s board and also chairs Exelon’s executive committee.
Prior to being promoted to CEO on Dec. 31, 2022, Butler served as president and chief operating officer (COO) of Exelon. Previously, he served in roles of increasing responsibility at Exelon, including as senior executive vice president and COO, Exelon Utilities CEO, and as CEO of BGE. Prior to that role, Butler served as BGE’s senior vice president for regulatory and external affairs. He also held various leadership positions at ComEd, including as senior vice president of corporate affairs and as vice president of governmental and legislative affairs.
Before joining Exelon in 2008, Butler held senior leadership roles in external affairs as well as manufacturing with the print, digital, and supply chain solutions company R.R. Donnelley. Butler spent his early career with Central Illinois Light Company (CILCORP, Inc.), which would later become part of Ameren Illinois.
Butler is on the Board of Directors and serves as the vice chair of the Institute of International Education and on the Board of Governors for Argonne National Laboratory. He is a member of the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago, on the Board of Directors of the Economic Club of Chicago, and is immediate past chair of the Greater Baltimore Committee. Butler also serves on the Board of Directors for the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, the Caves Valley Golf Club, and the Annika Sorenstam Foundation, in addition to the James Madison Council of the Library of Congress. He is a past chair of the Gridwise Alliance.
Butler earned a bachelor’s degree from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., and a Juris Doctor degree from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis. He received an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from Morgan State University in 2014.
